Tips When Calling 911
Posted On: Sep 30, 2005

The 911 emergency number is designed to provide immediate access to emergency services. 911 saves time for the caller, reducing overall response time for all emergency service providers. More time is potentially saved with enhanced 911 systems, which provide location information to the 911 center.

911 Call placed from a wired telephone will display the subscriber address and name to the 911 Dispatcher. The dispatcher will confirm this information prior to dispatching emergency services.

Wireless 911 calls are generally routed to the closest Connecticut State Barracks or the closest PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point). Wireless 911 calls may not show the location of the caller. In 2004 technology has been installed that will assist the dispatcher in determining the location of the caller however it is vital that caller stay on the line with the 911 Dispatcher and be prepared to give the location of the emergency.

Tips for Calling 911

q       Use only to report a Fire, Police or Medical emergency

q       Know where you are and where the emergency is located.

q       Be prepared to give a description of your location if you don?t know the actual address.

q       The dispatcher will ask questions that will determine the proper response to send, this will not delay help arriving.

q       You may be directed to perform lifesaving measures, the dispatcher will help you.

q       Stay on the Phone until the Dispatcher tells you to Hang up.
