PHILADELPHIA, PA – he Philadelphia Firefighters Union issued a 'no confidence' vote in Mayor Michael Nutter, Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers and his deputies during a protest over service cuts Friday.
Dozens of firefighters gathered at the Fire Administration building in Northern Liberties to express their opposition to recent cutbacks made due to city budget problems.
The energetic crowd called for the replacement of Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers, saying officials are forgoing safety to save money. Commissioner Ayers could not be reached for comment.
Last month, seven fire companies were closed in hopes of saving $10 million towards a $2 billion city budget gap.
The Firefighters Union is taking their case to the airwaves with the release of a dramatic new radio ad in hopes of swaying public opinion.
The ad, heard on KYW Newsradio 1060, features a simulated 9-1-1 call with a fire victim pleading for help only to be told help is not on the way due to budget cutbacks.
The Philadelphia Firefighter's Union Local 22 paid for and developed the new ads to increase public pressure on Mayor Nutter to reverse the cuts.
"The reason we picked to do an ad like this is that we're afraid that a phone call like that's going to happen," said Dave Kearney, union secretary.
While Mayor Nutter has said that he hasn't heard the ad, he is aware of its content and disappointed that it is being aired.
"It is unfortunate that the union would engage in those kinds of scare tactics," said Mayor Nutter.
The union is planning on following up the radio ads with three new billboards targeting the mayor specifically, highlighting a comment that he made in support of the firefighters.
